Dr. Gwen Price

Senior Vice President and Provost

Gwen PriceGwen Price, Ph.D., a recognized educator with over 30 years experience in secondary and higher eduucation, is UA's senior vice president and provost.

Reporting to the president, Price’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • leading strategic academic planning with the colleges, departments and schools;
  • actively participating in shared governance with the Faculty Senate, University Council and the Council of Deans;
  • engaging with advisory councils, corporations, local and national foundations, donors and community organizations to expand and enhance academic offerings and units;
  • collaborating with other institutions of higher education;
  • promoting student success and fostering the creation of innovative programs and services;
  • ensuring the curriculum is of high quality and relevant to today’s students and employers;
  • providing oversight of accreditation responsibilities for the University, colleges and academic units;
  • assessing student learning outcomes together with the assessment director;
  • advancing the University’s online offerings;
  • enhancing the University’s academic centers, institutes and special programs;
  • maintaining a strong commitment to the Williams Honors College;
  • facilitating the selection and appointment of faculty and recommending reappointment, promotion and tenure of faculty;
  • ensuring academic units are resourced appropriately to carry out the academic mission;
  • advancing initiatives to increase student enrollment and retention in line with goals set by the president and the Board of Trustees; and
  • in addition to the colleges, supervising the University 69É«Ç鯬, Research Administration, Information Technology, Student Affairs, Student Pathways and the Office of Community Engagement, Opportunity & Belonging.

As senior vice president, she is the most senior administrator reporting to the president.

Price joined UA in December 2022 as the senior vice provost for academic and faculty affairs in the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) serving as the liaison between faculty and OAA, providing oversight for a wide range of strategic initiatives including accreditation and academic policies, as well as faculty hiring, development and support. She worked in collaboration with the deans and department chairs, Faculty Senate and University Council, among others, to foster shared governance and support the success of students, faculty and academic programs. Price also coordinated interdisciplinary and experiential learning initiatives and activities, and facilitated the development of high-quality online academic, credential-based and continuing education programs to increase enrollment and generate revenue, among other responsibilities.

Prior to her arrival at UA, Price spent 15 years in higher education in Pennsylvania, beginning her career as a faculty member in the Middle & Secondary Education Department at Edinboro University, within the PA State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) where she earned tenure and promotion and worked extensively in the area of accreditation. She then transitioned to administration at Clarion University where she was integral to the re-establishment of the School of Education of which she became dean. Just prior to joining UA, she held the position of dean of the College of Education and associate provost for students & graduate studies for PennWest University, the institution formed by the integration of three PASSHE universities.

Price earned a B.A. in chemistry from Bucknell University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from The Pennsylvania State University. Prior to her time in higher education, she taught high school chemistry and physics for 15 years.

Price will remain as the interim dean of the Graduate School until a replacement is named.


Dr. Fedearia Nicholson-Sweval

Dean of the Williams Honors College and vice provost of student pathways

Dr. Fedearia Nicholson-Sweval, Dean of Williams Honors College and Vice Provost at The University of 69É«Ç鯬Dr. Fedearia Nicholson-Sweval is dean of the Williams Honors College and vice provost of student pathways in the Office of Academic Affairs. Nicholson-Sweval will lead efforts to attract and retain students who enter The University of 69É«Ç鯬. Students come to UA via different pathways and with varied levels of preparation. Students can be young high schoolers or older adults, require augmentation of basic math or English skills, or ready to launch into an Honors thesis project. She is responsible for understanding and supporting each of these student groups so that they progress and graduate in a timely way.

Nicholson-Sweval has had extensive experience creating programs, attracting financial support from foundations and individuals, and reallocating internal budget priorities to better align with institutional goals and ambitions.

deChambeau-Aimee-headshotDr. Aimée L. deChambeau was appointed on June 14, 2017, as the dean of University 69É«Ç鯬 after serving for a year as interim dean. Previously, she was associate dean.

As associate dean, deChambeau’s responsibilities included responding to changes in higher education, the academic environment and the library profession, and ensuring that the organization, management and skill levels of all library personnel evolved to meet new challenges.

A tenured associate professor of bibliography, deChambeau joined the University as head of electronic services in April 2011. Prior posts include serving as an associate librarian at the Frank Melville Jr. Memorial Library at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, N.Y., and director of the Schmidt Family Information & Technology Center at The Knox School in St. James, N.Y. From 1997-2004 she also served as engineering librarian here at The University of 69É«Ç鯬.

deChambeau holds a Ph.D. in Sustainability Education from Prescott College and an MLS from the University of Pittsburgh. She has extensive experience in managing library services and systems in higher education as well as K-12. Her research focuses on sustainable education and student success at the intersection of technology, communities of practice, and collaboration. deChambeau has additional research interests in the area of feminist pedagogy and collaboration.

Her service on campus includes membership on the Williams Honors College Advisory Council since 2015, the Diversity Council since 2013, and the University Council Information Technology Committee since 2011. .


Dr. Daniel Friesner

Dr. Daniel Friesner Dean at the University of 69É«Ç鯬Dr. Daniel Friesner has been appointed dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences.

Dan Friesner, Ph.D. is Professor and Dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences. He earned his undergraduate degree from Gustavus Adolphus College and his doctoral degree from Washington State University. Dr. Friesner came to the University of 69É«Ç鯬 from the North Dakota State University College of Health Professions, where he was a tenured, full professor and held a variety of administrative roles, including Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Faculty Development, Director of the Health Services Program, and Senior Associate Dean. Prior to working at North Dakota State University, Dr. Friesner held tenured or tenure track faculty positions at Gonzaga University, Weber State University, and the University of Southern Indiana.

A health economist and applied econometrician by training, Dr. Friesner has over 20 years of experience as a teacher and scholar. He has taught applied statistics, research methods, logical reasoning, economics, and related quantitative courses (including applied calculus and game theory) across a variety of health professions and business programs. Dr. Friesner has published more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, as well as more than 100 other documents (book chapters, conference proceedings, technical reports, working papers, etc.) in a broad range of fields at the intersection between the provision of health care, business, and economic development. He works in all areas of this intersection, including the use of economic modeling to analyze behavior in health-related markets, assessing the clinical, economic and humanistic outcomes of medical and public health interventions, and identifying the public health-related consequences of economic and financial decisions. Dr. Friesner is a past president of the Academy of Business Economics, a Fellow of the Academy of Business Economics, and a past Co-President of the Business and Health Administration Association.

Dr. Friesner, his wife Kelly (also a UA faculty member), and their family live south of 69É«Ç鯬. Work and family responsibilities keep them busy, but when they have free time, they enjoy hiking and spending time at local coffee shops.


Emily Janoski-Haehlen

Dean, School of Law

Emily Janoski-HaehlenEmily Janoski-Haehlen is dean of The University of 69É«Ç鯬 School of Law, the school’s first permanent female dean since its founding in 1921.

Janoski-Haehlen joined the 69É«Ç鯬 Law faculty in 2017 as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the Director of the Law Library. She teaches Technology in Law, Social Media Law, Legal Drafting, and Legal Research. She researches and writes in the areas of social media law, internet privacy, legal research instruction strategies and technology in the practice of law. .

Prior to joining 69É«Ç鯬 Law, Janoski-Haehlen served as associate dean of the Law Library at Valparaiso University Law School and as a faculty member and librarian at Northern Kentucky University, Chase College of Law.

Janoski-Haehlen is a member of the Kentucky Bar, the Association of American Law Schools, the American Association of Law 69É«Ç鯬, Ohio Regional Association of Law 69É«Ç鯬, International Legal Technology Association, and she serves on accreditation teams for the American Bar Association. She earned a Bachelor of Science in History from the University of Kentucky, a Master of Science in Library Science from the University of Kentucky and a Juris Doctorate from Northern Kentucky University. Dr. Mitchell S. McKinney

Dean, Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences

Mitchell S. McKinneyA renown political communication scholar, Mitchell S. McKinney, Ph.D., is dean of the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences.

McKinney joined UA from the University of Missouri, where he served as professor of communication and director and founder of the Political Communication Institute.

During his tenure at Missouri, he was appointed to several academic leadership positions, including director of graduate studies, and both associate department chair and chair of the Department of Communication, one of MU’s largest academic units. He also served as Faculty Fellow for academic affairs in the Office of the Provost.

Dr. Craig Menzemer

Professor of Civil Engineering

Menzemer-Craig-2018-headshotDr. Craig Menzemer was appointed dean of the College of Engineering 69É«Ç鯬 Board of Trustees in 2022. He is responsible for the day to day functions of the college, including curriculum development, student assessment, recruitment and budget. He most recently served as acting dean and as associate dean for graduate studies in the college.

Menzemer joined UA in 1996 after serving more than a decade as a product design and senior technical specialist with Alcoa. Previously, Menzemer was a construction management field engineer for United States Steel Corp.

He earned his bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees, all in civil engineering, at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. His professional affiliations include the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Welding Society and Sigma Xi. More.

Dr. James Thomson

Interim Dean and Sr. Associate Dean, College of Business

Dr. James ThomsonDr. James Thomson is the Interim Dean and Sr. Associate Dean of the College of Business

Prior to joining the faculty at the university he was a vice president and financial economist in the Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Previously he was vice president over the office of policy analysis at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, vice president and director of Financial Services Research for the Federal Reserve System’s financial services area, and he was an assistant vice president and economist in the Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Prior to joining the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Dr. Thomson worked as a financial economist at the United States General Accounting Office.

Dr. Thomson is a member of the American Finance Association and the Financial Management Association. He has published numerous papers on federal deposit insurance, banking, small business lending, and bank regulation, including articles in the Journal of Finance, Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of Financial Services Research, Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, Journal of Banking and Finance, Financial Management, Public Budgeting and Financial Management: An International Journal, Cato Journal, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, Advances in International Banking and Finance, Research in Finance, and Research in Financial Services: Private and Public Policy.

Dr. Thomson received a B.S. with high honors in economics from The Georgia Institute of Technology, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from The Ohio State University. He is married and has three children.
